Inspectors Bio's

Father of three girls, Catie 19, Molly 16 & Annie 9.  Married to Cathy for the past 23 years.  We live in a 40 yr. old home in Carmel, IN.  that was built with a crawl space then converted to a basement.

In 1991, I was offered to take over and run my Dad’s home inspection business.  In 1976 my father began Dave Surette and Associates, Inc. when I was 14 years old.  My younger brothers Scott and Randy also operate inspection companies in the Indianapolis market place.

During the past 20 yrs I have inspected nearly 10,000 single family homes.  I bring an understanding of defects in foundations based on experience.  I know when your foundation system is defective and which repair method will correct the problem.  I also know that foundations are one component in the complicated system you call home.

I served two one year terms as the President of the Indiana Chapter of the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI).  In that position we formed professional relationships with MIBOR, IAR, BAGI and completed a five year effort with our State legislatures to enact a law requiring licensing for professional home inspectors.  This began July 2005.

When I am not working, I enjoy traveling in our mini-motor home with the family. But most of the time I ride bicycles and have competed in long distance events such as RAIN (Ride Across Indiana). My best ride was the Hilly Hundred with my daughter’s Catie & Molly.  We rode a tandem with a tag along.  I seldom had to pedal.  I am active with Bicycle Indiana, the state wide advocacy group for bicyclist. Currently I serve on the License Plate committee.  Beginning 2011 you will be able to purchase an           “I Share the Road” bicycle license plate through the BMV.  Proceeds will improve the transportation system for all user groups as it relates to bicycles.

I am originally from Greentown, IN but moved to the Indianapolis area after my honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy in 1998. I lived in the Broad Ripple area for about 8 years, and then moved to Noblesville in 2006 where I currently reside with my beautiful latina wife and our 2 children.

The Navy taught me a lot of life skills, which I believe helped to mold and shape me into the person I am today. Among those, Pride, Integrity, Honesty, and Professionalism are core values I practice everyday, both in my personal life, and professionally as a Home Inspector. Being involved with Naval Aviation, attention to detail was also a big part of my daily life in the military, and something I think has carried over well into my career as a Home Inspector. I performed various duties while serving, but all revolved primarily around H-3 and H-60 helicopters.

After the military, I came back to my home state of Indiana and embarked on a career in commercial and industrial scale Fire and Security systems. This included computer integrated and software driven Card Access Control Systems, CCTV systems, Burglar Alarm / Intrusion systems, and Fire Suppression systems such as Halon, FM200, & Co2 systems for data centers, computer rooms, and other applications with highly sensitive electrical equipment. I started out as an install technician / trouble shooter, but quickly worked my way up to Project Manager and Systems Design Engineer. These roles provided me with opportunities in large scale commercial construction projects to work closely with various special trades to coordinate the installation of our systems throughout various stages of construction.

In 2001, I bought my first home. It was somewhat of a fixer upper, built in 1946. Through the process of remodeling and just fixing things, i became more interested in houses, and real estate. It was then that I decided to make a career change and decided to use my G.I. Bill to take the pre licensing courses required to take the state exam for becoming a licensed Home Inspector. I took the state exam and passed in the fall of 2005. I then proceeded to become licensed and was inspecting full time by the start of 2006.
